FAQ's
1. What exactly is a Cottage Tent, how much space will I have?
The cottage tent is made up of canvas exterior & dimension of 14 ft X 14 ft. The tents have windows with mosquito proof nets on the sides. There is one entrance from the front and one exit to the rear of the tent for entry into the bath room. Each tent is set on a cemented platform. There is a large sit-out area in front of each tent.
2. Are there showers, washrooms, toilets en-suite?
Yes, you will have your very own private flushing toilet and hot shower.
3. How many people does each tent sleep?
Each tent will sleep two adults and one other person. Extra cot is available on request.
4. Is the camp child-friendly?
This is a very child-friendly camp but parents are required to ensure that the children do not wander off into the water’s edge which is in very close proximity to the camp area.
5. What is your child policy?
As a rule we do not charge children below 5 years age. Children below 5 years will also not be allowed for any water activity as an extra safety measure.
6. What's special about the camp?
Besides being the first such camp in Kerala, the location where the camp is located is nothing short of stunning! The river Periyar flows right next to the camp, the lowland forest of Thattekkad is right in front and the area is calm and quiet. The main USP of the camp is that it is managed by the local community members, many families depending on the income from this camp for their livelihood (tuk-tuks, taxis, local vegetable farmers, the local guides etc..). Hence it is in essence an eco-camp in its true sense and not a label as a marketing tool !
7. What will the weather be like?
From October till March, the average daytime temperatures will be up to 28 to 32 degrees, and by night they drop to between 16 to 25 degrees, with fairly high humidity. During April till June, the temperatures would be considerably higher. There may be occasional showers throughout the year, but these will be short. The monsoon months are from June to September where you can expect heavy prolonged rainy spells.
8. Is there Aircon in the tents?
Yes, but there is a fan inside which is adequate to cater for the weather at Thattekkad.
9. What is the food like?
The food is ethnic & delicious. The cuisine reflects the diverse spices available in Kerala & with its many influences from all over the world. There is a huge array of flavors and colors in the food. There is a central gazebo which doubles as a lounge and dining area.
10. How do I get to Hornbill Camp?
Cochin International Airport has regular flight connections to the main hubs of the Middle East and South East Asia. There are also regular domestic flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Please contact your travel agent for other options. From Cochin International Airport, you can take a pre-paid taxi to Hornbill Camp (50 kms). If you are arriving from any other place, Kothamanagalm is the nearest city. From there taxis or tuk tuks are available to Palamattom near the camp.
11. What are the physical activities on the trip and what level of fitness do I need?
The main physical activity here is kayaking. You need not be an experienced kayaker. The water here is flat and calm and suitable for beginners also. We do insist on life jackets to be worn while kayaking. This camp is primarily a birding camp and some walking will be involved but the difficulty level is low. There are also opportunities for some easy cycling and walking. All these activities can be done by anyone with average fitness levels and are completely safe.
12. Do you accept credit cards & how can I access cash when I'm at the camp?
We do not accept credit cards at the camp. However, there are ATMs in the nearby town and accepts most cards. Please talk to the manager about the locations of the ATMs.
13. Is liquor available at the camp?
No, we do not serve liquor at the camp. However, there is no law against consumption of alcohol.
14. Is there a TV - how many channels?
Sorry, we do not have televisions. Rather we want you to enjoy the sights and sounds that the surrounding areas offer you naturally. This is getting back to nature, with a tint of luxury!
15. Are there laundry facilities?
The camp has no dedicated laundry facilities, but we will get the clothes done for you from the nearby village. Please contact the Manager for any assistance.
16. What are the Booking & Cancellation policies of the camp?
We require a deposit of 30% of the total amount as Booking Advance, with full payment 45 days in advance of arrival. You may also pay in full at the time of booking. A full refund will be made on cancellations 60 days or more prior to the scheduled trip. For cancellations 60 - 30 days in advance, a 75% refund will be given. For cancellations 30 days or less prior to arrival no refund will be given. Further no refunds will be given for unused rooms or meals.
